Welcome to the Level Up Mental Health Blog

Dr. Mike

Welcome to my blog centered around strengthening family relationships and mental wellness in our increasingly digital world.  For better or for worse, our children are spending more time on the internet — we all are.

But what impact is this having on our children’s developing minds?  What impact is this having on our social world?  If we are always so well connected through technology, why do we feel like we are becoming more disconnected from those we love? If you are coming to this website you are undoubtedly seeking to strengthen your bonds with a family member.

As for who I am, I’m currently an in-training psychiatrist nearing the end of my formal training journey.  I have training in Adult as well as Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.  In my clinical practice I have paid special attention to my patients’ electronic and video game habits when taking a thorough history. This blog will be different than others out there as I have either personally researched topics in peer reviewed journals or have experience treating many problems in my clinical practice.  Throughout my training I have learned to be a great listener and feel that I have taken something with me from each person who visits my office.  Often, I’ve seen families seeking to be closer together but who have been unable to do so either due to distraction, self-doubt, or fear.  I hope to share with my readers some of the lessons I’ve learned from seeing patients and their families over the last few years.

Who is this blog for?

With launching this blog I have two types of readers in mind. Parents who want to learn more about how digital media affects their children and how to help them grow to have a healthy relationship with electronics, and Teenagers/Young Adults/perhaps older adults who may have an over-reliance or unhealthy relationship with digital media, video games, and the electronic world.
Broadly, topics in this blog will be:

  • How to set limits around electronic media and screens
  • How to have a frank conversation with your child about internet safety
  • How be more engaged with your child
  • Effects of screen media overuse on the developing brain
  • Discussions about how your child can use technology to help them grow
  • General topics in Child mental wellness
  • General topics in Adult mental wellness

Most of what I know I have already learned from you the parents, if there are questions or topics you would like me to cover then I would like to hear about it, please send me a message and I will do my best to answer.

I am excited to be starting this journey with you the readers and I am looking forward to sharing what I know as well as learning what you know.  We are in a more connected world than a generation ago, lets make sure that we stay connected on a human level.
